Location The Glen of Aherlow offers a beautiful, relaxing atmosphere – and manifold themes for painting outdoors. Endless variations of green found in the patchwork of farms hugging the gentle slopes of the Galtee mountains. The drama of constantly changing skies. We’ll be exploring the local countryside in watercolors, words, and walks – wandering along the excellent network of signposted trails, writing and sketching in our portable watercolor sketchbooks. Participants should be able to walk easy to moderate trails, carrying their own painting materials (and bag lunch) in a small backpack.

Instructor German-American Gabriele Glang is an experienced and enthusiastic plein air painter, published (bilingual) poet, and workshop teacher. For nearly three decades, she has taught painting and writing courses both at her studio in Germany, as well as in Italy and Denmark.

Accommodations We’ll be staying at Tigh Roy, Ionad Cultúrtha, which is reserved entirely for us from August 1-8. Our host Roy Galvin, former ballet dancer and traditional Irish musician, dancer, and teacher par excellence, conceived this creative center as a tranquil artists’ retreat – off the beaten track, but easily accessible. In addition to delicious home cooking based on regional and seasonal products, the center offers modern and comfortable accommodations in the magical atmosphere of the Glen of Aherlow, County Tipperary. With fine views of the Galtee mountains, the bedrooms are simply decorated, with double or twin beds. All rooms are situated convenient to WCs and shower rooms. In the event of inclement weather, a spacious studio is available for our exclusive use.

The Workshop This workshop will focus on landscape painting with pastels and watercolors outdoors. Each day we will build on what we learned the day before, covering materials, techniques, and themes appropriate to the genre of plein air landscape painting, e.g. composition, values, color theory, perspective, etc. Adapting to the local conditions and time of day, we will combine pastel painting on site at field easels in a range of locations within a short drive of the studio (transportation will be provided by our hosts Fiona and Steve), along with working on our portable travel journals. This modus allows us to move around freely, painting whatever enchants us – for instance, the 11th century countess Mathilda of Canossa’s residence at Carpineti, a Benedictine monastery, along with spectacular vistas of mountains, rivers, woods, meadows, and medieval churches. We will have bag lunches on site, making the most of our time outside. In case of inclement weather, the workshop will take place in the Villa Lugara’s former stables. In addition, each participant also has the use of a personal studio space there. The workshop is suitable for all levels, with one-to-one tuition as needed.

Villa Lugara Our English hosts, Fiona and Steve Geilinger, both creative artists (Fiona: fine art, dance, short films and garden design, Steve is an arts documentary director), split their time between their home in Great Britain and the Villa Lugara in Italy. In 2019 the Geilingers decided to open their Italian home for a handful of on-location arts workshops each year, inviting artists whom they admire to teach them. I visited Fiona this past June to check it all out – the open views of the surrounding landscape, the mountains, the orchid-studded meadows – I can imagine no better place to teach landscape painting than Villa Lugara! Here’s their story:

We bought Villa Lugara, a semi-derelict,16^th century church farmhouse (casa canonica) in 2014 and spent the first year working on its restoration. It was run as a seminary, or eramo, where the local priest, Don Andrea, hosted initiates for study and enlightenment. This spirit, or anima, captivated us. The setting is beautiful, tranquil, and verdant with wildlife. The soil is very fertile; the agricultural practice in the area, both commercial and domestic, is strictly organic. The house has its own kitchen garden, growing fruit, salad and vegetables. It has a number of magnificent art cities nearby: Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, Bologna, Ravenna, Mantua, and Verona. The lack of light pollution means that the night sky is an enchanting display of stars. The pool has an impressive south-facing view across the Secchia river valley, to the Apennine mountains beyond. It gets sun all day long and has lights for night-time swimming. Villa Lugara has three floors; on the ground floor, there is a large open-plan kitchen and dining room, a reading room looking out onto the courtyard and pool, a study, laundry room, and WC. We have furnished the villa with rustic antiques and have restored the cotto tiled floors. There are eight bedrooms and four bathrooms. We are gradually restoring the brick and stone barn. It currently contains an art studio with eight bays for individual work and enough space for gathering as a group. It opens onto a large portico, which is used as a teaching space and for enjoying meals in the shade, with a breathtaking view over the valley.
